There are many tools available in the self-help world. Books, cds, workshops, etc. All of these resources help you recognize your issues and patterns. Then comes acknowledgement. Finally, is the doing…. Or the “self-do” part of the journey.
We can spend a great deal of time on the discovery portion of our journey of personal growth. There may be a tendency to ruminate on the “what” and the “why” for longer than needed. Yes, this is a crucial part of healing yet there is one more step. We must “do” in order to heal, change and grow.
Self-do, as I call it, involves taking action. Making choices. Being conscious and aware. Creating change. Moving forward. We cannot change what we don’t acknowledge so work this process fully. Yet don’t forget to “do”.
Sometimes we get stuck in the discovery phase out of fear; fear of change in life and relationships and fear of the unknown. But true healing requires change and change requires action.
The discovery and the action happen in tandem. Perhaps in your “doing” phase you discover a new aspect that needs review. Do your review then take action once again out of this new information, and so on. Be aware of times when you have been in the what/why phase for an extended period. If change hasn’t occurred, chances are you’re still in that phase. Again, it is an important part of the process but be aware if you have a tendency to swim around there too long out of fear to move forward.
You are the key to self-do. Become conscious of your actions, thoughts and feelings. Have a support system of friends, family and/or professionals. Take action that is aligned with creating change out of your discoveries. Step into the new space, the new you and your new life step by step, day by day, moment by moment. Self-do and help yourself!
